WIDESPREAD UNREST
SERIOUS STRIKES BREAK OUT IN JAPAN. “DOWN WITH CAPITALISM 1” Reuter's Telfeeram. TOKISr July 9. There is widespread industrial unrest, culminating in minor strikes in manv places. There are extensive strikes in the Kobe shipyards, accompanied by riotous demonstrations. At the Kawaski dockyard, which employs 20,000 men, the employees struck owing to the employers refusing permission to them to organise a nnion. At the Mitsubishi yard two thousand walked out, because of the laying-off of so mo of the employees. The strikers paraded with banner* inscribed: “Down with capitalism7* There were many clashes with the police, and there were several serious casualties. Tho Government arsenal at Tokki. which employs fifteen thousand workers, was the scene of considerably trouble. The men are demanding ar eight-hour day and ten hours’ pay. t delegation attempted to see the Pro; mier, and the Minister for War, anc tho latter agreed to meet the men or Sunday to discus* general labour questions. Several factories anticipated the wage increase deiaands by closing down The number of unemployed if steadily increasing.
