OTAKI v. OLD BOYS. (Special to the “Times.”) This match, played at Otaki on Saturday, to a liard-fouglit game from start to finish, but was chaructersied by some rough play, for which there was no necessity. Tlio contest was chiefly a forward one, and in this, departure honours were fairly even, although Otaki secured the ball on the majority of occasions. Several passing bouts u-exo attempted, but, except on two occasions, without much result. Towards the end of tho first spell Hapela, for Old Bovs, had a free kick at goal, but the bail fell short, but J. Po'liio, from a free kick, found the uprights, the ball striking the bar and bouncing over. Otaki then showed a deal of dash, and forced play, which eventuated in Subutsky touching down. The referee ruled that the ball was over the dead-ball line. In the second half play was very hard—willing from start to finish. At times good play was witnessed, while individual play among the backs was verv creditable. Tuna, for Otaki, had a long, but useless, shot at goal, while, later, Larsen, from a forward scramble, scored a good’ try. Tuna failed to convert, and honours were even. The game continued a- hard one, hut eventually ended with no further score. Mr Stan. Parker was referee, Hakaraia did the bulk of the back play for Otaki, while Fogden and Subutsky proved reliable. All the forwards played with dash, but some were inclined to play the man instead of the ball. For Old Boys, all the hacks were good, but failed in passing rushes. The above match, played at Foxton, was a splendid one l -from start to finish, «and was in the balance till shortly before time was called. The game was (M 5 till Meta. Johnson scored, and Rainiri, by a fine kick, converted, making the score 11-6. Don Wilson and Joe Ropata also scored for Hui Mai.
