Henry' Levy Wolland pleaded guilty to the theft of woollen goods, 'the property of Messrs Macky, Logan, Caldwell, Ltd., on February 19th. Sentence was deferred. * THE MAXIMUM PENALTY. At the Supreme Court Mr Justice Adams, in dealing with the case of William Albert Hedley Love, who pleaded guilty to incest on his own child, said he was going to impose the maximum penalty, but deferred stating it until he ascertained the limitations of the law. Robert William Pegley, circus labourer, for indecent assault on a girl, ten years of age, was sentenced to seven years’ hard labour and a flogging of .ten PLACED ON PROBATION. MB VRESB ASSOCIATION ' DUNEDIN, May H. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court concluded this morning. Fergus William Campbell, aged 17 who plead'ed guilty yesterday to a charge of indecent assault at Oamaru, was released on probation for three years on condition that lie pay the costs of the prosecution, amounting to £22 14s, by monthly instalments. Tuapaea Whitau, for perjury, was released on probation for three years. CHARACTER UNBLEMISHED. FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, May 11. George Roland Stratford pleaded not guilty to a charge of rape. After a retirement of five minutes the jury returned a verdict of not guilty, with a rider that the accused left the court without a blemish on his character. TARANAKI DISTRICT. ppiruß knariUT i-nryw NEW PLYMOUTH, May 11. Mr Justice Reed oocupied the Supreme Court bench to-day. In the hearing of a charge against Stuart J. D. Russell of attempting to carnally know W little Sirl, and with alleged indecent assault, Lis Honour directed the jury that there was no evidence to support the carnally knowing charge. After a retirement of four hours the jury disagreed, and a new trial was ordered for May 23rd.
