A previous message stated:—®. Newton, a native of Dunedin, was detained by the Custom* officers on the Rrverina when she arrived from Auckland. Re has been aboard since the vessel left for Auckland, where he was not permitted to land, as he. refused to take the oath of allegiance, _ which he contends was introduced during his absence from New Zealand. Re denies that he is disloyal, bnt states that his conscience will not permit him to take the oath, either here or in New Zealand.
