APANESE AND MAORIS

SINGULAR POINTS OF RESEMBLANCE.

Discussing the characteristics of the Japanese race and comparing them with those of the Maoris, Dr. C. S. Davis, of Waiapu County JlospiiJ&l, New Zealand, who returned to Sydney last week by the Tango Maru from a world tour, said he was struck by the similarity between many of tho Japanese, particularly those who came from the north, to the Maoris. Their build was the same, and in their fades they had most of the pronounced features that marked the Maori. Their incantations and chanting at a wrestling bout, or at any other gathering, were similar to those of the Maori, and they also had the same custom of removing their footwear on entering a dwelling. He thought it was remarkable that two nations situated so far apart, should be so alike in many things.
