A STOLEN RING
YOUNG GRIL’S IDEA OF GRATITUDE. “You' have been guilty of a mean tlieft,’ ’ remarked Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday to a young girl just over sixteen years of age, who was charged with the theft of a diamond ring valued at £2O, frpm Kate Pearce. Chief-Detective Ward informed the court that accused had been on her way to the Trentham races on May 9th last, when some accident had happened to her wearing apparel and she had called at the house of Mrs Pearce, who had kindly allowed her the use of a room. On the girl’s departure the diamond ring. had been missed, and when a detective had called upon the girl she had denied all knowlege of the matter, but had shown him another ring, which somewhat resembled the missing article. The next day she had handed the real ring back to her mother to he returned to its owner. Accused, who pleaded guilty, was placed on probation for two years. On. the application of her counsel (Mr C. A. L. Treadwell) publication of the girl’s name was forbidden by the Bench.
