Some figures, showing the remarkable growth of the borough of Takapuna, wore quoted by the town clerk, Mr S. Brittain Bull, at a social gathering of the retiring and newly-elected Mayor and councillors. The total amount expended since the inauguration of Takapuna Borough was £86,450, and they had paid out-for street maintenance, £24,107. They had paid out of the .general rate for interest and sinking fund £14,845. The valuation of the borough at the time of its institution was £1,013,947. With, the annual additions and subdivisions, on April Ist, 1920, the capital value of the borough was £1,182,286. The Government valuation of 1918 gave a total of £1,182,286, and the last valuation was approximately £1,657,640, an increase of £475,372. Between the two valuations a piece of land representing a capital value of £34,530 was transferred to Devonport.
In the course of his duty last year the attendance officer of the publio schools of Otago found it necessary to serve 236 notices on parents and guardians for infringements of the Education Act, and investigations into 337 cases were necessary owing to the unusual amount of illness and for other reasons. Eleven penalty summonses were issued under section 62 cf the Act, and convictions were obtained in all oases.
