MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

MAYOR AND COUNCIL MB WRIGHT "PLEDGED ONLY TO SERVE THE CITY.” "A CITIZEN’S CANDIDATE.” In answer to an inquiry as to pledges to particular organisations, Mr R. A. Wright, Mavoral candidate, mad© it oi©a.r that 6o far as he is concerned he ha a not been, a-sked and has mot given any pledges of any kind whatever to any body or organisation. ilr Wright added, that he was a citizens* candidate, free and untrannneoled and pledged only to render the best service possible to the citizens as a whole. That was a pledge he was proud to give and a pledge that he would keep, to the utmost limit of his capacity. He was a citizens'’ candidate first, last, and all the time. Mr Wright addresses electors tonight at the ooncert chamber. Several other speakers will also address . the meeting. __ MR S. H. UNDERWOOD. '■'A PROGRESSIVE POLICY." In his recent addresses, Mr Underwood, a candidate for the City Council and Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, said he was not a tyro in matters municipal, having had six years pf hard work on the Miramar Council behind him. He was offering bi s services because he reit that the difficulties of the times necessitated the closest attention to the many matters that were ever 'before the council and Hospital Board. He had no business calls to hinder hie full attention to a councillor's moat important and onerous duty, committee work. The present was not an opportune time to raise money. He favoured the tabulation or the many authorised works and their being commenced in the order of then* relative importance to the community as soon as circumstances permitted. As to rates, he would not be a party to taking the full advantage of the opportunity the increased valuations offered » nt all events while present conditions continued. The necessity of better roads, of more and properly equipped recreation grounds, of the active encouragement of legitimate sport, of extending the water and drainage services to those parts of the city at present without, and of more • satisfactory arrangements of transit for suburbanites* MR T. BUCKLEY. oni poweeThouse site. Mr T. Buckley, speaking on the powerhouse sit 6 situation, again stressed the reliability of water power electrical supply as already demonstrated toy the undertakings of the kind in the JDomamon and elsewhere. Ample development was in progress, as the present scheme of water storage works was the foundation of provision for 160,000 h.p. in the first place ancl about 320,000 h.p. ultimately. If the scheme be kept unloaded with unnecessary capital charges demand for power would be promoted. This would tend to reduce the peaMoad and lessen any running of the plant for peakload purposes. With the prospect now of reasonably early supply the equipment of 3-phase plant at Harris street need not be so much as was originally pro* poeed for that or Evans Bay site. If development were likely to mil* to keep pace with the demand owing to unforeseen demands, as vie suggested iu Mr Birke's report, that very feature was on© for his department to watch the more closely to avoid the consequent difficulties.. It was unthinkable that the Government, aiming to promote the supply of water power to advantage communities, would slacken in energy of development, and thereby mulct consumers in heavy unnecessary charges, thus defeating the good effect of the waterpower supply ror the vigorous prosecution of which it is ‘being so generally applauded. Mr G. H. Baylis, who is a candidate for the City Council, will hold a meeting at' St. Hilda's Hall, Island Bay, tonight at 8 o'clock. Mr Baylia announces that he is out for tram reform, permanent work out of loan, housing scheme on proper base, improvement of the city generally. Labour candidates wall address meetings to-night at the. following places:— Ngaio, Slethodii6t Hall; Berhampore, Masonic Hall; Roseneath, Schoolroom; and open air meetings at Gbuznee street, Green street, Newtown, and Holloway road (near the soldi ere' -statue, Mitohelltown). The candidates recommended by the Greater Wellington Committee are listed on a blue card, copies of which are being widely distributed. ,A number of these candidates, incluuding Mr R. A. Wright, wilt speak fin. the conoerfc chamber to-night.
