CRICKETERS ON TOUR
AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND. MANAGE® INTERVIEWED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, April 20. Mr Smith, manager of the Australian team, and Carter arrived at Oricklewood by aeroplane, and were delighted with their flight. On arrival at Oricklewood they were besieged by photographers and interviewers. -Carter ri© leaving for Yorkshire to-morrow. Th© team will start practice at Lord’s on Monday. (Received April 21, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 20. Messrs Carter and Smith (manager) of the Australian cricket team, were entertained at the annual dinner of the Wanderers’ Cricket Club. Mr Latham, Australia’s representative in England, and other old cricketers were present. In an interview with the "Daily Chronicle” Mr Smith said :• —"There has never been a more formidable array of batsmen and it was difficult to imagine better fielding, but if an ‘Anzac’ Rhodes or Woolley existed he would .have been included in the team. The Australians were without a ‘star* left-hand bowler capable of taking opportunities on British wickets. I expect Mailey to repeat his Australian successes. batting and bowling are miraculous and hia fielding make him one of the most extraordinary cricketers we have ever had. The seven months’ season portly explains the excellence of Australia's cricket; also the wickets. Most of the junior teams
play otl\ matting, but all -the higher grades have true turf pitches. There are no bad patches in Australia. "These visits act os an Empire oemeift. Britain never sent a better lot" of fellows than the last team, the members of which captured all tne hearts in Australia.”
