THE MAYORALTY
PLETHORA OF CANDIDATES NEGOTIATIONS FOR REDUCING THE NUMBER. REACHING FINALITY. Negotiations fo>r the reduction of the candidates for the Mayoral chair have been going on for some weeks, but so far no satisfactory issue has taken place. Several meetings have been held between the candidates’ committees and between the contestants themselves, but all have resulted abortively. Parleying is still going on between tho parties, and it is understood tho negotiations have now taken a turn which gives reason for the confident hope that a definite announcement will be made within tlie next few days. The advisability of reducing the number of contestants against the official Labour candidate is generally recognised ; it is clear that it all the nominees went to the poll the odds would be largely in favour of the Labour Party’s choice. The result of the attempt to reduce the non-Labour contestants to a single candidate should he known by Wednesday.
