THE MAYORALTY
POSITION UNCHANGED. The position in connection with tho Mayoral election is unchanged. At present the candidates mentioned are: Messrs L. McKenzie, C. J. B. Norwood, and R. A. Wright, M.P. (members of the City Council), the Hon. T. W. Hislop (ex-Mayor), Air T. S. Weston, and Mr P. Hickey (representing official Labour). Attempts have been made to induce different candidates to stand down in favour of one or other of the remaining contestants, but so far all attempts have proved unavailing. Negotiations are, nowever, still proceeding. Early in the month Mr McKenzie’s committee wrote suggesting that Mr C. P. Skerrett, president of the Welfare League; Mr C. M. Luke, chairman of the Central Chamber of Commerce; Mr George Mitchell, M.P., secretary of the Progress League; and Mr F. Meadowcroft, representing the Election Committee of the Greater Wellington Association, should be appointed to form a committee and hold a conference with a view to seeing if the number of candidates. Could be reduced. The suggestion was made prior to the making of a request to Air T. S. Weston. Nothing appears t<o have come of the suggestion, and the position is therefore decidedly interesting. With a number of candidates standing the Mayoralty, it is said, ia sure to go to Labour.
