EDUCATIONAL WANTS

HOSTEL FOR STUDENTS DEFERRED THROUGH FINANCIAL STRINGENCY. DISTRICT DEMANDS. The Wellington Education Board met yesterday, the chairman,-Mr T. Forsy th, presiding. The Director of Education advised that the proposed expenditure of .£IO,OOO upon a hostel for students would purchase little more than the site alone. Owing to the financial stringency it was inadvisable to approach the Government in the matter, and the provision of hostels would have to stand over for the tmie being. It was decided, on the motion of Mr J. J. Clark, that in view of the small price offered for The Terrace school building the executive should be asked to reconsider the question in conjunction with Professor Tennant, principal of the Training College, to see if anything further could be done. PARA.PARATJMTI SCHOOL. The Depaitment of Education notified that it could not provide additional accommodation at -the Paraparaumu school as required. It was explained that on account of congestion, some classes had to be crowded into two rooms, or the workship utilised. It was decided to approach the Minister in the matter. TE ARO SCHOOL. The board decided to forward on to the department a recommendation from the Te Aro school committee that the Mitcliellfbwn scliool should bo separated from the main Te Aro school. SHANNON SCHOOL. A request was received from the Shannon school committee for provision of conveyance for 20 or 30 children at Mangahao hydroelectric works to Shannon, a distance of some miles. It was pointed out that a report would shortly be given by an inspector, who was about to visit the district, and it was decided to leave the. matter in his hands. HATAITAI SCHOOL. The Roseneath school committee communicated that additional accommodation was required at Hataitai, as the present accommodation was inadequate by one class room. Messrs Clark and White were deputed to inquire as to the amount of work that would be involved in the provision of further spaoe. and to draw up a rough estimate of the cost. WELCOME GRANTS. Advice was received that an additional grant had been authorised for * a new school building at Featherston. The board is required to provide .£964 towards the cost of the building and to renew the furniture in three classrooms. It was also notified by the Government that an additional grant of J 8556 15s 9d had been authorised for expenditure at the Eketahuna school. A request for a shelter shed at the school was declined. The Government advised that it did not approve of the board’s proposal for the acquisition of a new 6ite for the Mauricev.ille West school. The board decided to proceed with the purchase of a sit© adjoining the present building. TENDERS. Tenders were accepted for the erection of a new school at Featherston, a secondary school at Eketahuna. and for the new infant department at the Te Aro srhool, to be erected on the Terrace gaol site. Chatwin, assistant (Kilbirnie); Miss I. Woodhouse, sole teacher (Ugbrooke); Miss C. E. Butcher, principal (Clyde quay); Miss M. Morrison, sole teacher (Hamilton Bay); Miss P. Rule, pupil teacher (Masterton D.H.S.); Miss E. M. Death, home science instructress.
