THORNDON BATHS
TO BE PERMANENTLY CLOSED. FINANCIAL AND HEALTH REASONS. The Finance and Property Committee recommended to the City Council last evening that since the conditions for bathing at Ijfae Thorndon baths were unsatisfactory the baths should be permanently closed forthwith. The Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke), refertfe mg to the sum of money recently authorised hy the ratepayers to be raised for the purpose of erecting new baths at Thorndon, said that debentures issued in connection with the loan would have, a currency of twenty years. Unless the period were reduced to ten years he did. not think they had much hope of raising the moneys. He had approached the Prime Minister with a view of having the legislation amended to that end, and if Councillors Wright and Fraser, the other members of Parliament on the council, would lend their support, he thought it would be possible to secure the amendment during the coming session. Meanwhile, the baths, for financial reasons and in the interests of public health, would have to be closed. The recommendation was adopted.
