RECREATION FOR CHILDREN. ; / CITY COUNCIL WORKS. The City Council Reserves Qommitte© tsr thoroughly seized with the necessity for great provision in the matter of recreation grounds for children, and' has of late been devoting a good deal of time and attention to the subject. The work of laying out tho Prinoe of Wales Park, which is to be formed on a .site on the town belt near Salisbury terra oe with the gate money secured from the special benefit football match attended by the Prince of • Wales last year, is to be proceeded with as far as the money available will permit. The levelling off of the site will be the first work entailed, so that the ground will b© m readiness for the sowing of the grass this anffimn, The ground, when completed, will be a fine playing area for th© children of the district. It ha® also been decided to utilise the area of land stretching along the lower part of. .the town belt between Pirie street and Elizabeth street, as a chilclren's recreation ground. The Wellington Tennis Association has advocated for some time that this area should be converted into a large tennis ground, suitable for tournaments. The reserves however, has come to the conclusion that the expenditure involved by such a work would be too great, and is, on- the other band, impressed with the- suitability of the site for a play ground. The ©itv engineer (Mr W. H. Morton) and the Director of Reserves (Mr J. McKenzie) are to import on the layout of the grounds on economical lines.
