BOWLING

INTERESTING DETAILS PRESIDENT OF ASSOCIATION INTERVIEWED. STANDARDISATION ADVOCATED ct Ycs,” said Mr T. Bush, president of , the Dominion of New Zealand Dowling ‘ Association, when interviewed by a “Times’' reporter yesterday, “tho recent tournament was an unqualified success, and the services rendered by Mr S. H. Underwood, the secretary, were of exceptional merit. ’Again, the gentlemen who acted as umpires and the various k greens and the other officials helped in ' no small measure towards the success. The Wellington Bowling* Club officials had net only placed the pavilion at the disposal of the executive, with its many ! facilities, but had helped in many other 1 ways, and in this respect he desired to jnention Messrs Sulek, Magnus, Carr, ! and Tasker. ! Bowling was going ahead by leaps and i bounds, lie said, and the number of entries received for the, several events at | the last Dominion tournament was a world’s record for this class of sport, j while the prospects for the future were | exceedingly bright. Sinoe the associaI fcion had been formed the annual tournament had been held twice in each centre ’(Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, 1 and Dunedin), and the time had arrived | when the system of play should be [standardised. Centralisation was not to, be contemplated, but the appointment \of a permanent secretary was urgently | needed. The substitution of two games; of twenty-five heads each in the rank competition instead of three games daily of twenty-one heads had met wdtk general approval, and he thought that in all probability the system would be adopted fit future tournaments. The size of the tournaments were such, ’however, that i serious consideration would have to be given to the playing of the pairs and singles games either at some other time or to confine them to competitions between the champions of the various clubs or the champion of champions o? the centres. , TOURING TEAMS. Mr Bush added that the teams 'of bowlers who left this week for Great Britain were promised a happy time. At -the various places of call en route they would, through the good offices of the Government, be well looked after by the British representatives stationed in those centres, and on arrival in London they )vould be entertained by the Lord Mayor. The teams of bowlers who were to have visited New Zealand this year, but were prevented on account of shipping troubles, have intimated that thsy are arranging games in Sydney for the New Zealand bowlers, and the Australians themselves would, visit the Dominion early next season and would take part in the Dominion tournament at Dunedin in January, 1922. Teams of bowlers from South Africa are also expected to reach New Zealand in December next, and they also intend to be competitors at the annual tournament, whilst a cordial invitation has been received from the Australian Bowling Association, as well as from the South Australian Association, for teams from the Dominion to compete at the tournament, which is to be held at Adelaide at Christmas. FINANCES. The finances of the New Zealand Bowling Association, as a result of the tournament, were in a satisfactory condition, and. from that point of view it was the most successful of the eight tournaments which have been held. The executive would go out of office, a« at present constituted., in August next, and it was anticipated that there would be a sum of upwards of .£250 to hand over to the council, which -meets in Dunedin. The tournament which was held at Christ-, church last year, was not a financial* success. The season was started with a credit of <£l79. which was forwarded 1 from Auckland, and of this amount £l6o’ was expended in war bonds. Catering, however, was .provided, at Christchurch for visiting bowlers, and many difficulties had to be overcome, which made a hole in the finances, added Mr Bush, who concluded by saying that he considered that bowling would become, in a few years, the premier ©port' of the Dominion. CITY COUNCILLORS AND STAFF. The annual match between the City Council' <and members of the Corporation staff was played on the Wellington Club’s green, and resulted in a win for the council by 5 points. Two rinks competed.
