To-day’s Labour Conference on unemployment unanimously adopted the maintenance proposals, and adjourned till February -‘3rd to enable the union executives to ascertain the opinions of members on the steps necessary to secure the carrying out of the recommendations. The Parliamentary Committee was asked to take steps unless the Cabinet brought up the subject in the House of Commons. Mr J. H. Thomas said that probably some would Interpret mean that the February Conference will have a mandate for direct action. 1 (Delegates: “Hear, hear ”) Mr Thomas said that w’hs not the case. The Joint Committee neither affirmed nor rejected direct action. The adjourned conference must decide the question The PaMiamentary Committee of the Trades Union Congress and the Joint Committee on Unemployment recommended on January 23rd that those for whom no work is available through employment exchanges or trades unions are entitled to maintenance, including bent fit« under the Unemployment Insuranee ' Acts, at the rate of 40s a Week for each householder, 25s for each •Ingle man or woman, and additional allowances for dependents.
