CHARITABLE RELIEF
WORK OF LOCAL BOARD. FINANCIAL OPERATIONS'. The financial result of the operations of the charitable aid branch of tho , Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board during the nine months ended December 31st last, was dealt with in a report presented yesterday to the board. It was as follows: — “The effective position is that the expenditure is below the estimate by £467; the receipts above the estimate by £604; the net amount to the good is, therefore, £lO7l. There is a small element of uncertainty in the receipts as stated above, because it is unavoidable to include recoveries from the Education Department, which are not yet receivable. But, on the other hand, the expenditure has to include accrued liabilities under the same head. The figures, however, vary so slightly from year To year that the conclusions are reasonably safe. In particular, outdoor relief is below the estimate by £1024, and maintenance of children by £139, a total of £1163, while the indoor relief is above the estimate by £685, and outdoor medical service by £ll, a total of £696, thus making the net “below estimate” £467’. The expenditure to date is £10,344. Liabilities accrued, but not yet payable: Industrial schools, £4719, and special schools £370—£5089, a total of £15,433. Proportion of estimate, £15.900; expenditure below estimate by £467. PROSPECTS FOTf NEXT THREE MONTHS., “The tendency of outdoor relief being to remain stationary, or decrease slightly, a reversal of the present position is fairly improbable. Indoor relief, on the contrary, tends upward owing to dietetic modifications, increased cost oF all commodities, higher wages, and a more liberal allowance" of pocket-money. There will also be special expenditure on account of the more than usually extensive repairs, etc., determined upon, the cost of which, as was made clear, is not ascertainable owing to the nature, of the work precluding contracts or reliable estimates. Even so, however, there does not appear t#' be any reason for anticipating any serious discrepancy ' between the net expenditure and estimates.” ASSISTANCE LAST MONTH. Charitable relief was granted in the city and suburbs during last month as follows, the figures in parentheses having reference to the corresponding period in 1919:—Outdoor: Number of cases assisted, 84 (115); daily average number of individuals receiving assistance, 283 (396); rations granted, 911 (1255); cash grants, £l9O (£384); cash grants, children’s maintenance, £SB" (£121). Indoor: Dailv average, 102 ~(99).
