HEW ZBALANDER'S EXPERIENCES ABROAD.

There arrived at Wellington by the Remuera on Tuesday evening a. gentleman of many and varied.military experiences, in the person of Mr George £>• Smith—son. of the late Mr Harry Smith, a well-known early «ettl*r of New Zealand, who resided in "Wellington up to the-time of his death. '■ Mr Smith comes of a fighting family, and the activities of his predecessors p this respect have been ably carried on. in the late war by himself and his five surviving brothers. His father, who.ieceived his education' at ■ Bugby, -went through the Indian Mutiny with the 12th lancers, and arrived in New Zealand by the ship Succour in 186*. Mr 0.1-E. Smith, as a youth, was in the employ of the "New Zealand Times," and in 1899, applying for service with the first contingent that'left for'the Boer Wai, and beintr turned down, worked his paraage to England, where he passed the sharpshooters' test at Bisley, and was attached to the headquarters staff of the 18th Battalion Sharpshooters', with which he saw lengthy service In South AfricaHe was rewarded with the Queen's medal and five claepe. After the -.war he saw nine years' service with the Boyal North West Mounted*- Police in the Arctic ■ regions of Tipper Levada, where he 1 saw many ■ exciting experiences. In 1914 he enlisted with the 13th I Lancers as Kind's Corporal, and went right through the hard fighting up till the retirement from Mons, when he, was invalided back to England with 'chell shock. For these engagements be te eeivcd the Mons Star, with olasp and rose. Later he served with the 6th (Heserved Cavalry Regiment in the Irish Rebellion, and received his disoharue towards the eno! of 1918.- Vonr ct'tU brothers, all New Zealanders, saw service with the Dominion Force* In the late war; a fifth is Mr C. Smith, of Nelson. ■
