CHRISTCHUECH, September 7. .Jhe tone of the oat market show* a sontinued- improvement, and business has been transacted at an. increase on week-end quotations. . A grade Gartona have been sold at 5s f.0.b., 5.1.; and B-grade at 4s 9d. Inquiries, continue to be received from the north, but merv chants anticipate further movements towards pre-slump values, and sellers | are not plentiful at present values. There is lively inquiry for the bulk "of the grass seed lines, and Partridge peas are also in request, and axe worth 9s 6d to farmers for good peas. All offerings can be assimilated abroad. The dilly-daliying over the removal of the potato embargo and the. prospect of rigid trading conditions being imposed are not helping the tone of the market. Some merchants express their intention not to bother with 'the trade as the passing of the time is reducing the prospects of the export trade paying. The time has arrived when the tubers will have to be re-picked and re-bagged (representing a charge of about 35s to 40s per ton), and this additional cost, combined with the conditions suggested by the Sydney merchants, and the short time now left to operate, tends to make merchants indifferent about the trade. Large quantities of potatoes have been shipped north during the past week or so. FRUIT AND PRODUCE. ■WHOLESALE PRICES.
