5000 APPLICATIONS OUTSTANDING.

Tho Defence pay department is engaged in squaring.up applications in respect to gratuity grants that have been late in coming to hand. A considerable amount of work is also involved in paying retrospoctivo camp allowance. Prior to August 1916, men who entered camp recened Territorial pay for tho first month, and subsequently it was decided to make up the difference so that each man who went through tho camps should bo placed on an equal footing, and each receive Expeditionary Eorce pay. To carry this into effect,, a large amount of detail work has had to be accomplished and this is Bearing coinP Through want of knowledge or apathy, a number of those who are entitled" to retrospective allowances in respect to widows and children and other dependents of soldiers have not forwarded their applications, and in order to clear the work up the department has issued 5000 circulars. These havo been sent out to those who have omitted to moke application, and aro having tho desired effect. The pay department has still a number of deceased soldiers' accounts to settle and this is being done' as expeditiously as possible .after the information has been roceiyed from relatives Hospital mamtainanco and the payment to men who are under treatment is also being carried out by the department.
