BORROWED MOTOR-CAR
RUNAWAYS CAUGHT NEAR ASH'BURTON. On Wednesday . night last Inspector Hastiej of Timaru, received a telegram from lnvercargill stating that a motorcar had been stolen from that .city and giving its make and number. He'-in, formed his staff, and at 10.30 on Saturday Constable Ohristopher saw a car being driven through Timaru at a rapid rate. Tho number had been taken off it, but he took it to be the stolen car, and informed his superior officer. Word was at once'sent to Ashburton' to keep a careful watch at the Ashburton bridge. Two constables stationed themselves there, rut when -Xko car arrived tho driver refused to Etop, and would have run over. th» officers had they not got out of t'io way They thereupon hired a taxi and went in pursuit. Going through Ashburton the stolen car travelled at *.he rare of 40 miles an hour, but three r.-iles further on it ran out of petrol, .iud the driver and his companion (brothers) were caught. ;*
