ISLAND FRUIT SUPPLY
AN AUCKLAND VENTURES.
A venture to import oranges for Auckland supply from Norfolk Island was recently undertaken by .*l** 1 * land business men, with a very fair amount of success (says the totar ). The object was to land the fruit here with a minimum of waste. This was accomplished satisfactorily, hut owing to the schooner Bara, which was specially chartered, for the purpose, emmuntoriue bad weather, the trap extended owr ten days. and. thus the not satisfactory from a financial aspectoraigea excelled in quality the CahforS sun-kissed orangf. The shipment comprised iq. all 800 oases of oranges and kumaras, consignments of mandarins, bananas, and -j^L 0 kumaras compared favourably with sup nlies of this vegetable on. the local market* while the mandarins and bananas wore of first-class quality. . Norfolk Island is only 600 miles distant from Auckland, whereas B^Kdouga. from which large supplies of fruit, are drawn, is about 1650 miles distant, , : *lnr-conclusion, Mr Turner su °2 c sted that it only required a Government subsidy for a regular steamer service to Norfolk Island, to permit of lie fruit, right at our doors, to be landed .. here regularly- It would remit in a cheaper orange for the Auckland market.
