PERPETUAL UNREST

MINERS . “TRAGIC MISTAKE.”

No sooner does peace appear to have been established in tho coal-mining industry (says the Christchurch “Press”) than the mischief-makers cause fresh trouble. At Blackball the men , are refusing to abandon the go-slow policy, not because they have any grievance as to pay or conditions, but simply; because two of their number'have refused, to pay subscriptions to the fund being raised for the strikers at • Broken Hill. The men will continue to goslow until these two either pay up or are discharged from the company’s service. Tho impudence and folly of such an attitude as this almost beggars criticism. We shall not attempt to criticise it, further than to say that if they imagine they can afford to treat the community with the contempt implied in this incident, the miners aro making a tragic mistake. The’ case is one that calls for some stringent action by the Miners’ Federation, and w© shall be interested ,to see whether the federation will take that action, or whether it will give Silent •encouragement to the outrageous conduct of the Blackball men.
