She is due her© to-morrow morning. PALOONA SAILS TO-MORROW. The Paloona's departuie from Wellington for Melbourne has been postponed till 5 p.m. co-monow. The vessel arrived at Wellington yesterday morning from Melbourne via southern ports. A BRAVE CAPTAIN. ;" . 'Recently at Lloyds • Captain William Ellis' Jones, of the s.s. Caulium, was presented wth Lloyds’ silver medal tor meritorious service and a cheque for £9OO. The vessel from Singapore to Melbourne was laden with a cargo of 10,000 tons of benzine and benzoline, when she caught fire off the west coast of Australia. For fifty-two hours Captain and crew fought the fire, flames at times shooting to a height of 80 ieet. When the fire was subdued after herculean efforts the vessel was but a helpless hulk, but the flames were prevented from reaching,.the cargo. The captain refused to allow the vessel to bo treated as A derelict, and stuck to the ship. In response to a , wireless call the War Soldier appeared and towed the' vessel to port, tho captain refusing to abandon her. He slept for three days after arriving in port. The cheque was part of £2OOO subscribed by owners and underwriters for division amongst officers and crew. VALUE OF WIFELESS. An interesting incident, showing tho value of wireless, is reported. On Saturday morning the chief officer on the' steamer Wyandra, on route from Brisbane to Sydney, left the bridge ai 4.30 a.m., ill, and with alarming symptoms. There was no doctor aboard. The captain, alarmed, sent a wireless to the E.JI.S. Orvieto, alsq»en "route from Brisbane to Sydney, but tome hundreds of miles behind. The doctor on the Orvieto asked for the’symptoms,'and then got replies to a number of difficult medical questions. Then* he prescribed a certain treatment. The Wynndra’s officer remained very ill all day, but by Sunday morning he .had responded to treatment, and by Sunday afternoon, still being treated by wireless by the doctor, ho was much better, and by Monday he was on the road to recovery. Tho Wyandra got into port on Monday morning, and the Orvieto in the evening; and the first thing the doctor did on landing was to go and, see tho patient he had cured by wireless. „ FOR THE MERCHANT SERVICE. There has been no difficulty in getting sufficient boys for the Amokurn during tho year, and there are still a few ap- . plioants. waiting for udmission when " there are ■ vacancies fqr them (states the Marino Department’s report). Tho; usual technical school classes ip. connection with the ship wore carried on during the winter, and as tho' vessel did not go to sea during the summer the classes were continued in a modified form during tho season. Tho general behaviour of the boys has been good. There has been no difficulty in obtaining employment for them in other ships on completion of their training on the Amokora.

OIL FUEL ON STEAMERS. The introduction of oil fuel is being adopted by some of our Now Zealand steamers, and the e.s. Niagara has run with this fuel for a long time ■ (states the Marine Department's report). Steam can bo maintained with unvarying pressure all the time, and the crews are much reduced in numbers for the power developed, as the whole thing ts auto matic. The storage of oil in, the Sauk sprees, formerly used for water ballast, affords a considerable increase in the cargo-carrying capacity of the steamer using oil fuel.,. The cleanliness of the stokehold as compared with boats usin" coal as a fuel is very marked, and the working conditions of the firemen are of course, much improved. OVERSEA VESSELS.
