“GOING UP ”
BRILLIANT DISPLAYS BY CAPTAIN RUSSELL.
The people of Wellington were treated to a new phase of aviation on Saturday, when .they witnessed Captain Russell in Walsh Brothers’ Avro aeroplane, displaying the various manoeuvres for which the British ’planes became famous during the war. In the morning the aeroplane made a high altitude night over the city and dropped myriads of pieces of paper, which had a striking effect as' they * flickered through the air. The climax was" reached in the afternoon, when shortly, after 3 o’clock Captain Russell made his appearance over the Basin Reserve By a series of “stunts/ Captain Russell’s reputation as a skil-; ful aviator was made, while his .popularity was enhanced. The exhibition was clever in the extreme, among the best feats being the ‘ ‘dame duck ’ “looping the loop,” “banking,’’ and “the dropping leaf.” These displays were repeated over Athletic Park, and again over the city. Each time they brought forth rounds of applause. Flight were , also made yesterday, several passengers making the aerial journey. ______
