WAGES FOR WORKERS

INCREASED RATES GRANTED DECISIONS OF COURT OF ARBITRATION.

The minimum rates of wages paid to workers in several occupations havo been increased by the Court of Arbitration, whoso decisions in respect of several applications for new awards : have been filed at tho Supreme Court. In each award are embodied the recommendations of a Conciliation Council. which were agreed to by the parties. The points in dispute were adjusted by the court as follow: BIOGRAPH OPERATORS. , "Wellington Biograph Operators.— Hours of work for operators in continuous picture shows, not more than 7 hours per day, and not more than 42 hours per week; operatives for night shows shall be such as fixed between the operators and the pro-; priotor. Wages: Where two operators are employed, chief operator £5 per week, second operator £4 10s per week; ■ second operator who has been in actual employment ■ as an operator for less than 12 months, £3 10s a week: whore one operator only is employed, £4 10s per week; casual operators for single evening performance, £1 3s; for continuous shows, 4s per hour. Overtime rate: 4s per hour, and provision is also made that 14 days’ holiday on half-pay he allowed annually to each operator. Work done on Christmas Day and Good Friday is to he paid for at the rate of double time. The term of the award is,for two years. ", In a memorandum, the court stabed that Mr McCullough dissented from the award, he being of tho opinion that the rate of wages provided should be increased by at least 10s per week. BUILDERS AND GENERAL LABOURERS. Wellington. Builders and General Labourers. —Labourers engaged on actual construction of scaffolds. Is 8d per hour; labourers assisting in the erection or demolition of scaffolds. Is 7d per hour. For general labourers, the following rates_ are to bo paid:— Tunnel men and timber men. Is 9d; quarry men, Is 7d; working underground or employed' in concrete, pick and shovel work, sewer work, kerhing and channelling, laying and cleaning drains, and asphalt and tar work. Is 7d. In ' addition to tho rates specified above, all workers are to receive a bonus of 3d per hour. The term of tho award is two ’years. . COOKS AND STEWARDS Federated Cooks and Stewards.— Rates of pay per month: Chief steward, £l6chief cook,'. £l6; cook-stew-ard, with assistant or assistants, £l6; cook-steward Without assistant, £lB (chief Stewards or chief cooks employed in vessels to carry 20 or more passedjjers, £1 per month .extra); assistant cooks and stewards, under 17 years. £8; 17-19 years, £9 10s; 19-21, £lO 10s; over 21, £l2; stewardesses, £9. Overtime: 2s per hour. Employees with twelve months’ continuous service are entitled to fourteen days’ holiday per annum on full pay,. -

PERFORMING MUSICIANS. Wellington Performing Musicians.— Every performer employed in Welling-ton-at general theatrical performance, including operatic, touring picture, dramatic, comedy, vaudeville, etc., £3 15b per week for six performances and lls for each matinee. Every performer at permanent vaudeville or variety shows, £3 IQs per week for seven performances, and lls for each matinee after the first; every performer at permanent pictuie entertainments, £3 5s peij week for six performances, 5s for the first matinee, and lls for subsequent matinees in each week. A special rate is set put for performers on mechanical instruments with travelling companies, dances, assemblies, balls, and casual performances. In addition to. tho rates set out, the court directs that a bonus of 6s per week ho paid to adult workers on weekly engagements, per week to female workers on' weekly engagements, and to hourly workers a bonus of IJd per hour. GROCERS’ ASSISTANTS. ' Wellington Retail Grocers’ Assis-tants-.—116-16 years of age, ‘lss per week; 16-17. £1; 17-18, £1 7s (id; 18-19, £2; 19-20, £2 10s; 20-21, -£3; 21-22, £3.105; over 22, ' £4 2s 6d; drivers, £4 2s 6d. .The rates set out are subject to a bonus of 5s a week. Hours of work: ,8 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on four days a week; from 8 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. on ono day; and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Saturday half-holiday. Any time worked in excess of these hours shall be deemed to bo overtime and paid for at tho rate of time and a half for the first three hours and thereafter at double time. Tho following are recognised as holidays: Anniversary. Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, King’s Birthday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. /Work done on these holidays apd on Sundays is to be paid for at double time. An anntial holiday of one week on full pay is also provided for. BONUS CLAUSES ALTERED. PAINTERS AND DECORATORS. The Wellington Painters'and Decorators, Wellington (30 miles radius), Grocers’ Assistants and Drivers, the Wellington, Northern Canterbury, Otago and Southland and Marlborough Shearers’ and Shed-hands’ awards have been amended in respect of wages and bonuses to, bring thorn into lino with other alterations recently made by the court in accordance with its recent pronouncement in respect of increased wages as a set-off to tho rise in the cost of living.
