N.Z. NURSES' MEMORIAL FUND

APPEAL FOR DESERVING OBJECT.

A fund which has done, and is still doing, outstanding good< work, is the New Zealand Nurses Memorial Fund, which was inaugurated in 1917 for the benefit of sick or aged nurses who, through no fault of their own are in need of money to make life possible in moderate comfort. So far, the sum ot £9500 has been collected in the Dominion, and the committee is issuing an appeal to those who appreciate ana realise the sacrifices of time and health made by the war nurses in particular, to assist in augmenting the fund and making it sufficient for tho necessities that are arising. So far, all that has been collected is invested in New Zealand Government War Loans. A rule has been made that no annuity may ! exceed £2 per week, but. tho demand is so great that the committee will not be able to grant relief in further cases unless, moro funds are available. The last case granted an annuity is that ot a nurse, aged 41, who has no relative in this country, has developed consumption, and is not fit for further work. Dr W. COMBINED BANKS DANCE

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Last night the staffs of tlie combined banks in Wellington held a dance in the Town Hall. This is the third of such annual functions, and was highly successful, the hall being well filled j in fact, almost too well, on' occasions, for the dancers' comfort. This was probably occasioned by' the fact that the space under the ' gallory was curtained off and used for supper, the Concert Chamber not being available. The decorations in the hall were particularly light and pretty. The canopy .of mauve and ivhite muslin ] which has done duty on several occasions, was again used, the festoons coming from the central electrolier, which had been lowered, and finished at the gallery railing, completely enclosing the hall. Festoons of lycopodium and pink flowers were hung at intervals also, and strings of coloured lights at the four corners. Palo pink festooned tho gallery railing, with strands of lycopodium, and tho stage was very charming. The front was covered with pale blue festooned with pink, and these two colours decorated tho arch, which was erected in the centre. The sides had white trellised fences and white trellis work formed a background with greenery. In front was a small pot plant with pink and red camellias. The alcoves at the sides of tho hall had been divided with white drapery, and the pillars wptb enclosed %vith trellises. Each alcove was carpeted , and furnished, ' and was marked with the name of one of the banks, so that partners could find oach other at their own offices. One alcove was marked for the chaperons; an excellent idea, as they s.o often find their seating accommodation invaded by the dancers between whiles. The end of the hall had' 1 a trellis work entwined with lycopodium and pink flowers to divide the supper room, and the supper tables were decorated with spring flowers. Among those present were several of the senior officers of the different banks and their wives. Mesdames McKay, Paul and Stott were the chaperons, and tho committee in charge of arrangements consisted of Misses Dobson, Eves, * Lebpard, Stubbs and Tracy, and -Messrs Haywood, Kennedy, Macrae, Miller, Palmer, Stevenson, Thorp, Turner, and Williams. Messrs D. W. Miller and A. Palmer were the joint secretaries.

Cable and Julie Maris; a Danse Appassionato was given 7>y Ethno Paltridge; a fairy tip-toe darnce by a four-year-old mite, Baby Ollivcr; Mary Cameron danced in "Joy Bells''; Ida Searle gave a Polka Caprice; Betty Carr was seen in a Carnival Dance; and Manoya Wilson a Waltz Gaiete.
