PUBLIC SERVICE INCREASES

STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER.

The question of public eeryic© bonuses and increases was again before tho House of Representatives yesterday. Mr R. A. Wright (Wellington Siiburbs) asked whether, in view of the statement made by the Prime Minister that the position of officers of the public eervice in receipt of salaries in excess of £SOO was to bo further considered in respect of the Imprest Supply (No. 2) Bill, had the Government decided on the line of action it would adopt. ■■' Mr Massey said that ho was not quite sure that he could give all the information asked for; but, so far as" the heads of departments were concerned and officers receiving £750 and upwards, they would, of course, have to he dealt with in the ordinary way by provision being made, where they were entitled to increases, on the Supplementary Estimates. There was a difficulty in connection with the not very large numher of officers receiving £SOO to £550 and. up to £750; and he had given instructions to make arrangements to provide against the injustice that had undoubtedly heen done in auoh cases. If the hon. member would put the question on the Order Paper, he would make ' inquiries and give a fuller reply later.
