PETROL FROM PERSIA
GOVERNMENT TO MAKE INQUIRIES. FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHKISTOHTJRCH, July 24. The possibility of obtaining supplies of motor spirit from Persia has been suggested recently, and the Hon. E. P. Ikkj was asked to-day whether tho Government had done anything in the matiber. 'He .replied *hat ' the question had been addressed to: him in Parliament, and he had promised 10 look into it. Tho .-iKent of the Shell Oil Company was it. New Zealand at presont, but had Hoc approached him. but ho had had a conversation with tho chairman of tho Board of Trade i about tho matter.
Mr Leo did not support the suggestion that thero was profiteering in regard to motor sprit. He said the Board of Trade from time to time fixed prices according to the invoice prices of companies imparting, and no increase was authorised unless the whole matter was gone into again. Mr Leo added that care had to be taken in handling the big American companies for if they liked thev could pass New Zealand altogether in the matter of supplies.
