SIXPENCE PER POUND
GASH PRICE FOR SUGAR EXTRA CHARGE FOR BOOKING AND DELIVERY. Although tho difference could only bo about a halfpenny per pound, there has been a good deal of speculation locally as to what the actual price of the “new" sugar—that arranged for by the Government —was to be. It was announced that the price would bo 6d per lb in the centres, but to this figure, it is understood, some exception was taken by tho retail merchants, on the ground that to sell at 6d per lb under all circumstances would not allow them any margin of profit. So a leading grocer told a “Times” representative who approached him on the subject.
Anyhow, representations were made, and the grocers got together. They held a meeting last night; it was well attended; and tho whole matter was gone into carefully. In accordance with custom, tho proceeding)! were private, but subsequently the “Times” was informed that an arrangement had been arrived at, and the following prices had been agreed upon; Sugar, sold for cash over the counter, 6d per lb. Sugar, booked or delivered, 6§d per lb. CHEAPER THAN IN CANTERBURY. It will no doubt be a source of satisfaction to AY e Hi n S* :on housewives that they will, at least for tho present, bo able to purchase their sugar at a cheaper rate than that which is to rule in Canterbury.' This was indicated by a Press Association telegram received last night from Christchurch. The message conveyed the information that tho chairman of ’the Board of Trade (Mr"W. G. McDonald) has fixed the retail price of “new” sugar for Canterbury at 6}d over all. Previously it had been proposed to charge 6d over the counter and 6)d booked or delivered, but the new arrangement makes a flat rate of 61-d per lb, which is subject to the usual discount.
