THE OTIRA TUNNEL
FURTHER LABOUR TROUBLES OCCUR, PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, July 12. lie, tunnel workers at tho Arthur’s Pass end of the Otira tunnel have been “out” since last Thursday week, July Ist, when their contract expired. Th© men, numbering 33, refuse to go back to work unless they are granted tho same rates of pay as the men at the Otira end. They claim that they have now com© into the inferior class of country for- which the Otira rates were fixed. The Alinister for Public Works, the Hon. J. G. Coates, states that he has ordered a report upon the subject, but tho men ask for a quicker settlement, and two delegates to-day asked tho Canterbury Progress League and local members of Parliament to take tho matter up. They state that no progress has been made in the tunnel for six weeks.
