Mr H. E. Newman, son of Mr end Mrs W. M. Newman, died suddenly in Napier Hospital. He entered the institution for an internal complaint, and whilst sleeping died_ unexpectedly of hemorrhage of the brain.

Mr A. L. Stevenson, manager of th< Waikato Shipping, Co., Ltd., and Mr F. Bond, of Hamilton, are en route to Noumea in connection with the purchase of a large steamer for the company’s service.

General Birdwood was accorded a civic reception on arrival at Palmerston North from Wanganui yesterday morning. Later, he visited the Returned Soldiers’ Club, and was entertained at luncheon by the Borough Council.

Mr Robert Moncrieff Cuthbertson, t New Zealander, soldier, sportsman, and journalist (formerly editor of the “Uitenhage Times”), died early in the morning of Wednesday, May :T2lh, at his residence at Uitenhage. Capo Province, South Africa. Mr Cuthbertson went to South Africa as an officer of the New Zealand Contingent during tho Boor war of twenty years ago, and he served there on the staff of General Long. After the war, Mr Cnthbertson finally settled down at Uitenhage. He identified himself actively with the public and social life of the place, and became extremely popular. Two sons of the deceased served in the late war, one of whom was honoured with the award of the 0.8. E. Mr Cuthbertson himself took a very prominent part in the local branch of the association known as the “Comrades of the Great War.” MR G. B. BULLOCK. Much regret has been expressed is shipping and commercial circles at tho death of Mr G. B. Bullock, Dominion' Superintendent for the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd., who passed aWay yesterday at his home at Wadostown as tho result of a paralytic stroke. The late Mr Bullock, who was fifty-seven years of age, had been connected with the affairs of the New Zealand Shipping Company from his youth. He joined the company as a clerk at Christchurch in 1882, and in 1387 was appointed local agent at Timaru. He left there in 1896 to become manager at' Napier, and three years later was appointed manager for the company at Dunedin. In 1914 he resumed the position of manager atWellington, and, on the retirement ®f Mr A. D. Bennett sdiiie ten months ago, ho was appointed Dominion superintendent for the company. Mr Bullock did good service during the war on the Overseas Shipping Committee ; ho was a prominent member of tho National Disputes Committee, and was chairman of the recontlv-concludcd conference between tho Government and the railway employees. He leaves a widow, one non, and a daughter.
