THE HIDE SALES

PRICES IMPROVE SLIGHT INCH EASE ON LAST OFFERING. Messrs Abraham and Williams report;—Wo offered a largo catalogue of all classes at the hide sales to a full bench of buyers. Bidding! was keen at a higher rate of values, compared with last sales, with tile exception of tallow, which was very dull or sale. Prices for hides and calf showed a alight recovery, and realisations should prove satisfactory to clients. We quote:—Hides: Ox heavy, Hid to 24jd; ox, medium, 17d to 23d; ox, light,, 16R1 to 18|d; ox, cut and slippy, lOd to 23d; cow, heavy, 13d to 19Jd; cow, medium, 15Jd to 18d; cow, cut and slippy, 81d to 2QJd; yearling and kip, 14id, to 223 d; yearling and Kip, cut. and slippy, 4d to 20Jd; calf, sound, 18d to 40Jd; calf, cut and slippy, IOJd to 32jd: bull, stag, Bfd to 14R1; horse, 7s to 27s 6d. Tallow: In casks, 50s to 61s; in tins, 16s 6d to 52s 6d. Sundries: Rabbit_skins, 20d; horse-hair, 24d; tails, 13d to 24 id. MURRAY, ROBERTS AND 00. Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co., report;—Wo submitted a catalogue of 1400 hides, 300 yearlings and kip, and 260 calfskins. Our offering of hides comprised some choice lots in superior condition, which elicited keen competition. Compared with last sale, the market showed a much firmer tone for heavy and medium ox, with a lower tendency in cows, light weights, yearlings, and calfskins. Inferior and damaged lots of the better descriptions suffered severely. Tallow showed a decline of 7s to "Ss per cwt. in casks, and up to 10s in tinned lots. We quote prices current as below:— Hides: Ox, heavy, 17jd to 24jd; ox. medium, ltd to 23d; ox, light, 16Jd to TB|d; cut and slippy, all grades, lOd to 23d; cow, 451bs and over, 13d to 19Jd; cow, under 451bs, 15|d to 18d; cow, cut and slippy, all grades, Sid to 20Jd; yearling and kip, light, ltd to 22id; yearling and kip, medium, Hid'to 21id; yearling and kip, cut and slippy, all grades, 4d to 20}d; calf, light, 17d to 401 d; calf, heavy, 18d to 27d; calf, cut and slippy, 10}d to 32Jd; bull, stag, Bjd to Hid; horse, 7s to 27s 6d. - Tallow: In casks, 50s to 61s; in tins, etc., 16s 6d to 52s 6d. LEVIN AND COMPANY. - Levin and Co. report: —We submitted a nice selection of hides to a large attendance of tanners and exporters and prices were somewhat erratic. In sympathy with the Australian market and a weaker American demand, there was a further decline in the market for all sorts except ox. Compared with the values current at the sale held a month ago, cow • hides showed a“ decline irrespective of weight and condition of from- Id to IJd per lb, whilst kip and yearling were 1 from id to lid per lb Jower. Messrs Dalgety and Co., report:— At the usual sale the catalogues submitted were larger than usual. There was a good attendance of buyers, and competition was quite keen Tor all lines of medium and heavy hides, prices being a shade firmer than at our last sale on April 23rd. Tho light hides, kips, and calfskins all sold at satisfactory prices considering the drop that has taken place in tho market, in the meantime, and rates were on a par with our last sale to a shade lower. Damaged' and inferior hides are difficult of sale, but we (Seared all our catalogue at satisfactory prices. In sympathy with, the London market, tallow prices were considerably lower, the drop being from 5s to 10s per cwt., according to quality. We quote-.
