TO WAIKUI-O-MATA
THE WATER SUPPLY AREA. , During the Easter holiday* , numbers of. people, chiefly motorists, made the journey __ _by ivheel and foot to the Wainiii-o-mata, dam, one of the water reser-* voirs which controls the city’s supply; 1 with the object of inspecting’the beau--tiful scenery which abounds in that 1 1 district. Much to' their disappoint- ’ ment, however, they found that » corporation regulation forbade them entrance to the reserve without possession of a permit. This regulation, though few are aware of the fact, has been in force for some years, and was "Strictly enforced during the war,- how- , ever lax the municipal authorities may have been in observing ft previously. ■ Referring yesterday to the necessity for placing the reservoir out of bound to the general public, the Mayor (Mr J. _ P. Luke) stated that , the City Council had always been conservative in the matter, and considered that in the interests of the general public, who in the end would W the ones who would suffer any discomfort by the contamination of the water, it was advisable to resit-riot picnic parties, etc., from using the reserve. If people specially desired to visit the dam they could do so after obtaining a. permit from the Town Hall -offices. This measure was one purely in -the interests of the public.
