EXPLANATION OF RECENT CRISIS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association LONDON. March 19. Sir Hamer Greenwood, speaking in the House of Commons, said that the British representative in Tokio had telegraphed an explanation of the situation. The dissolution of the Diet on February 26th was duo to the Opposition’s proposals regarding universal manhood suffrage, for which, the coun. try was not yet ready. It was, therefore, decided to hold a general election in May. "The Government’s opponents and the newspapers wore heavily attacking the Cabinet also on finance, and the failure to reduce the cost of living. The immediate result of the dissolution is the failure of the Budget, which provided for an increased defence vote, tariff revision on Protectionist linos, and anti-dumping laws.
