Over two thousand Chelmsford people have asked the Town Council, owing to the scarcity of houses, to provide lodgings in the county gaol, which is at present empty. The council has requested the Home Office to allot cells for two hundred single men. and to convert other space into flats. The Homo Office is favourable, hut will not permit structural alterations, as the building is liable to revert to its original purpose.
