COAL IS UP

INCREASE PER TON MINERS' WAGES: CONSUMERS PAY THE PIPER. Not altogether unexpected is the announcement that private mine-owners have raised the price of coal to the dealers. The local agent for three large northern mines stated to a “N.Z Times" representative last night that the ownors of these mines had informed their customers that from yesterday the price of household and steam coal would be advanced 2s per ton, “through" coal Is 6d per ton, and slack Is per ton. This makes the price on trucks at the pit mouth jump froe 28s 6d to 30s 6d per ton for household coal, ISs 6d to £1 for “through" coal, and Ss to 9b for slack. As the cost of railage from the noith is 15s 6d per ton, i; will he seen that bv the time the retail merchant has delivered to the householder’s hin the price per ton will be considerable. Asked what was the reason for the increase the agent said it was the result of the increased wages given to the men at the recent conference. It is understood that other big mines have made similar increases to their customers.
