MUNICIPAL STOKERS' WAGES
At a recent meeting of the Petona Council, the stokers employed at the Petone gasworks were granted a rise of wages amounting to 7s per week. The weekly wage paid to the stokers was £4 Hs, and the increase raised it to £4 18s. The stokers employed by the council work six-hour shifts seven days a week. The men have now informed the council that they are not prepared to accept the increase of 7s, and intimatedtheir intention of joining the Wellington Gas Workers’ Industrial Union.
