NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Carbine/’) Nominations for the Auckland Eoyal meeting close on Friday. ■Wellington autumn nominations are due with the secretary, Mr A. E. Whyte, on Friday. Other nominations closing on Friday are Riverton, Avondale and Westland. Greymouth nominations are due ‘on Saturday. - Amberley, Matamata and Westland acceptances close to-day. , Miss Gold made a jog of the race she won at Opaki. The Luoullus filly was top weight, but she is a really good-looking sort, and gallons very attractively. Very little idea of her ability could.be formed from her winning effort on Saturday, for there was noth ing in the race capable of extending her. Nevertheless it is certain she has a good burst of speed, and as she looks well and solidly made she may have a profitable future. ) Stutter has improved somewhat in looks. She was started twice on Saturday at Masterton. _ In her first start she had no chance until Miss Gold and finished outside a place. On_ her second appearance she took on Eisingham. Her prospect of winning was nil, but she paid a great price for second and would have returned double figures could she have won. The steeplechaser Arlington has been put‘into work again at Miramar. He will be got ready for the Eoyal meeting at Christchurch. Street .Memory has run her last race in hacks. She will not be taken to Rangitikei, and her next appearance will bo at Feilding at Easter. Perfect Day, who was expected to run well on the second day at Wanganui, injured himsolf just before the meeting; . He has recovered and ran a fair race at Opunake. Eed Eibbon. looked very well in the birdcage at Opaki, but as usual sweated freley. Those connected with the Elel ration mare would not hear of her deI feat in the big handicap, and the opinj ion was borne out when the chestnut left the field at. the bottom of the 1 straight and strolled in alone. Even though she .was pulling up as she neared the post there was nothing within lengths of her when she crossed the line. A year ago Eed Eibbon was at the top of her form, and if she comes back to the condition eho was then in there should be more victories ahead of her. It may interest some racegoers to know that Sasanof and Golden Bubble were scratched at 4.15 p.m. on the day before the Masterton meeting. King Lupin, who in his day vw among the best sprinters in the land, has keen retired to the stud. la, brilliant chestnut won most of his races over short courses, but once succeeded over 1H furlongs in the Takapuna Cup. His stake earnings totalled over £7OOO. Nobleman is one of the early favourites for the Eangitikei Cup. Others fancied are Lovematch and Eose Wreath. . The useful hack Prince Formby, by Formby—Lady Uhlan, broke a leg at the Opunake meeting and was destroyed. Eed Signal, who will in future be trained at Miramar, is to bo turned out for a g°od spell. . Canyon will need to be unlucky not to pick up a stake at Ellerslie if sho is taken up from Trentham. Sportsmen up the West Coast reckon that Percy Johnson got a nargain when he secured the stallion Hallowmas. H. Gray had a good innings at Opunako where he rode three winners, two seconds and a third, out of six mounts. Differently handled Chimera should have won tho Masterton Flying. Astinome was allowed to get a tremendous break on the field, and in addition to this Chimera was carrying the burden of 9st 51b, an unusual proportion of which was dead-weight. It is reported that Mr Harold Brown has sold hi? stables, is going out of j racing, and has offered Arrowsmith to < a Taranaki-ifce for £4OOO. If Mr Brown , does hang up his colours for ever, hda , will still be one of the moat meteoric ] careers of the New Zealand turf. In I his short career he has scored dn good ! races, and, if the report be true, he 1 has been a big winner. He has been ( plucky, and progressive, and the" turf ' does not like to lose men of that ‘ stamp. j , Army Service, who met with a slight j mishap at Wanganui, got a heavy fall I when schooling last week. 1 Lady General seems to have lost all ! form, and she is now bad at the bar- j rier. Her Opaki performance was far g from impressive. j If what one hears of him is correct, I it is time to be getting ready to back I Erin's Isle. American Beauty, who won the Elec- „ trio Hack Handicap at Opunake, was unlucky to lose tho Farewell event in | which sho ran second. Tho Welling-ton-owned mare was badly intfrfered g with by a competitor, who afterwards q came to grief. y I CJ.C. SCRATCHING E TTB. PEXSB ASSOOiTrOH. GH3USTCHUBOH. March 22. E Amythas was scratched for the S' Great Eastern Handicap at nine o’clock -g this morning- C s- .: V
