FLEET FOR CANADA
BRITAIN PREPARED TO PRESENT WARSHIPS. Australian ~»n.i ■-&»*£. (Received March-21, 0.5 p.m.) OTTAWA, March 20. It is understood that Lord JeUicoe’s report to be tabled in the House of Commons shows that Great Britain is prepared to present to Canada a fleet which at pre-war prices would be worth 16,500,000 dollars. This would include one light cruiser, four torpedo boats, eight patrol boats, one flotilla leader, eight submarines and four minesweepers. Lord Jellicoe recommends that Canada adopt a naval programme which would cost the first year 5,800,000 dollars,' of which 800,000 ■ dollars would be used - for—new--ships and 500,000 on maintenance of fleet, and the erection of defences.
A Government party caucus recently decided against the adoption of any naval programme this year.
