YOUNG MEN INDICTED
ALLEGED FRAUD ARRESTED ON BOARD MOEEAKI. Saturday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was presided over by Mr E. Page, S.M. five first offending inebriates were fined in small amounts or had their hail of 10s estreated a,s the case may be. James Power, an elderly man, pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness and to committing an indecent act in Manners street. The accused was convicted and fined os foi" insobriety and £5, in default seven days, on the other charge. ALLEGED FRAUD.
Harry Edgar Gqulding and Frank Da-wsey made their appearance to answer a charge that on March Ist ar Auckland they conspired together by fraudulent means to defraud Allan Donaldson of £l5O.
Chief-Detective Ward said the accused had been arrested the previous evening by Detectives Black and Trioklebank on board the Mccraki, which vessel was about to sail for Sydney. The warrant for the defendants’ arrest was issued at Auckland, and the Wellington police were not aware of the <Urcuinstances surrounding the charge. The accused, who were well-dressed young men, applied for hail. They said they were photographers and earned a livelihood, by taking photographs at various agricultural shows. They had no fixed place of abode, and had only been in the Dominion for a month. Ohief-Detcctive Ward informed the court that the accused, who had come from Australia, were not known to the New Zealand police. If bail was fixed he trusted that it would bo of a substantial nature. The accused when arrested had considerable sums of money, on them (Goulding £215 17s 4d, and Dawsey £96 o s Id). The country, however, did not want their money, but their appearance in court. The defendants were allowed bail each in a sum of £3OO with a surety of a like amount and remanded to appear at Auckland on March 27th.
