BREACH OF AWARD
FARMERS’ ASSOCIATION PENALISED. PER PRESS ASSOCT AXIOM. DANNEVXRKE, March 20. A case ,of interest to employers and employees : was before Mr Free, S.M., in which the Inspector of Awards proceeded against the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Co-operative Association for a penalty of £lO on each of two chargee ot not paying tho award rate to two employees in the grocery department. The evidence showed that the men concerned agreed, owing to ill-health and a desire to retain their positions, to work at some shillings per week less than the award rate, but the permission of the Labour Department was not obtained to the arrangement. When a now manager of tho firm was appointed he applied to the department for permission to continue paying under the award rate, which was how the department became acquainted with the breach. Tho Inspector of Awards said tho case was brought to show that there must be no agreement between the employers and employees to accept lower wages than the award granted unless the consent of the Labour Department is obtained thereto. A fine of £5 on one charge and £lO on the other was imposed.
