ATTACK BY MASKED MEN
ROTORUA SENSATION. GOVERNMENT SERVANT DEFENDS HIS HOME. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. ROTORUA, March 18. About one ©clock this morning Robert Raynor, ■ aged sixty years, who is employed by the Tourist Department, and who lives alone near, the Postmaster Bath, was attacked by two masked men. The men knocked at the door asking for matches. Raynor refused to open the door, but opened a small window and placed the matches within their reach. The men again asked him to open the door; threatening to break it down if he refused;. Raynor armed himself with a pick handle, and said he would defend himself. One of the men threw a piece of iron piping six feet in length through the open window, nearly knocking Raynor out. They further attempted to open the door and struck him with a second piece of piping on the forehead. Raynor opened the door suddenly and got, away, carrying a bag containing thirty shillings. One man followed him, and he dropped the tag in the ti-tree, andstaggered to a neighbouring house, tjie occupant of which took him to the hospital. Nine stitches had to be put in his head. The bag was found empty v The robbers entered Raynor’s house, but took nothing ayay. '
