DARING ESCAPE
PRISONER'S DASH) FOR LIBERTY. In connection with the arrest, near Rotonia, of two prisoners, Arthur John Brasting and a native named To Whiti, who had escaped from Whakatane in a,motor-car which they appropriated, it appears that Brasting, who is a clover mechanic, was entrusted by Constable Gumming to do certain repairs to his car, which, at tho time, was on the road outside the courthouse. During the constable's absence, Brasting not only effected the repairs, but also obliterated the number on tho car, and substituted another (A.24J.1) so neatly that it bore comparison with the handiwork of an oxpert. The capture of the escapees was accomplished by the police at Roitoiti placing thenCar across the road, causing the former—who, by the way, were travelling without, lights—to pull up. The enterprising prisoners, from the moment of leaving Whakatane to tho time of their capture, travelled at a tremendous speed. ~
