AUCKLAND MURDER
ALLEGED CULPRIT AN ARREST BY AUCKLAND POLICE. TZK rSE?S ASSC&IA.TIOS. AUCKLAND, March 17. The police this afternoon arrested Deinis Gnnn, aged twenty-six, on a charge of murdering Augustus Braithwaite, postmaster, a,t,Ponsonby on Saturday night last. A brutal murder was committed at •'onsonby on Saturday night, together irith a robbery at the Ponsonby Post Office. Augustus Edward Braithwaite, aged fifty-nine years, left the office about 6 o'clock, and returned to his home some ten minutes' walk away. His wife went visiting friends in the evening and on returning about eight o'clock found Braitlnvaite lying in tho back portion of the house. . At first sbo thought he had had a fit but laiter, tvhen a doctor arrived, it was found he had been shot through .the throat and bndv. The police discovered that the post .office keya were missing, and on going to the post office found a window and the door forced. Tho strongroom had been opened with keys taken from the dead postmaster, and three cash-boxes in the strongroom had been rifled. It is not thought that the sum secured was more than £l*oo.
