BRIDEGROOM OCCUPIES THE "'"WASHHOTTSEr BRIDE ASKS FOR MAINTENANCE

(Some -very peculiar cases oome before the Magistrate's Court, in which women seek separation from their husbands, and want maintenance allowances. One or the most singular was that dealt' with "at Auckland. The couple were only married on February 21st last, and on March 12th the wife was seek'ng separation and. maintenance. She was in receipt of Jo» per week from her former husband. The wife gave evidence in support of her and alleged that her husband' was an' habitual inebriate. This was,denied by defendant. In cross-examination he stated that the week he was married he spent three nights in the washhouee, Mr Singer: This woman turned the man out of the house at the end of tho first week oi" their married life, nnd now 'she 'asks' him to maintain her. Mr Cutten: If a wife is shown to be in Jtieed of support and the husband is able to maintain her; he must do to, oven if hiV leaving the bouse was .in wife's fault. _' Mr Cutten said as far as ho oould see, iboth parties were pretty far from normal. They were only married one week, and of that' time the husband spent three _days and three nights in the washhouse. After that very short, exp-srienco, the 'wife requested her husband to clear out, which he did. There was no evidence that the husband was an habitual inebriate. There was no ground for making a separation order, and ho was quite satisfied that at tho present time the defendant was not in a, condition to earn cnoiigh perhaps to keep himself.
