ECONOMIC SCHOLARSHIP

SIR ROBERT STOUT'S DONATION.

PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN", March 16,

The long list of donaltdons to tha Otago University was added|to yesterday (says a Press Association message) when Sir Robert Stout wrote to the University stating that he had forwarded to the Secretary'of the Treasury an assignment of £SOO worth of inscribed stock for establishment of a scholarship in economics. In ttie course of a covering letter Sir Roberto says: "I wiih that thi3 sum, with the gift that the Government will give, should be set aside for a scholarship or prize for the person who obtains tilie highest marks in fLrslb-class honours in «virioraics for the year in the Otago University without distinction of sex, olass, race, or creed. I also ithink it would be wise to seti aside one-tenth of the income each year to bo added to the capital sum so that in future years, if the interest falls, ttihe amount will be kept up to, at all events, what it is at present, and the accumulation, if continued for many years, may enablo a second scholarship to bo granted. In my opinion study in economics should bo encouraged. Tt> is the one tjiing that is needed."
