FIRE IN A MINE
MINERS OVERCOME BY FUMEB.
. . PEB FBESS ASSOCTAIHOK. . WAIHI, March 15. A fire broke out in timber in * no drive oa the Empire reef, west of No. 6 level of the Grand Junction mine. The outbreak was presumably due to 1 a lighted candle having been left in the drive when the men went off shift at 4 o'clock. Prompt measures were taken to confinei the fire to one set of timbers, 'but owing to a _fall_ of quartz it was not finally extinguished until the next day. No material damage was done to the mine. , During the progress of the fire, carbon monoxide gas mado its appear--ance, and seven or eight of those ~en- - gaged extinguishing the fire suffered :as a result. Two of the number, Messrs W. Bloomfield and "W. Pennell had to (be conveyed to their homes on stretchers, and they were • medically _ attended- Neither of them, however, is in a serious condition. The mine manager (Mr W. McCbnachic) was also attacked by fumes, and, as in the case of tho others, suffered from violent vomiting and was incapacitated for some time.
