WAIKOKOPU RAILWAY WORKS
FEB TRESS ASSOCIATION. WAIROA, March 16. The district engineer, Mr C. 15. Armstrong, in an interview last night stated that the Waikokopu railway works were about to be commenced. He had during the day conferred with Maoris through whose land the railway will run, and had been successful in letting contracts to th«m for three and a half miles of construction work. Natnves are to bo paid Is 6d per yard, the department supplying scoops and plant, except small tools nnd horses, which will be found by the natives. Mr Armstrong stated that he was running a light line from Teuhi Hill to the beach to bring shinglo for ballasting. He expected this to be tho cheapest shingle yet handled in the Dominion. He thought tho lino would bo built and tho stations erected in two years, as there wero no great construction difficulties. Tho Minister for Public Works was giving every possible assistaiice. As soon as the department sends the balance of tho plans further contracts will be let. Plenty of native labour is offering at present.
