ROADMEN’S WAGES

PETITION TO It A KARA COUNTY COUNCIL. At yesterday's meeting of the Makarn County Council the roadmen employed by the council petitioned for an increase in wages from I2s to 14s per day. the matter created considerable oiscuejnon. It was suggested that some of the employees were not doing sufficiently goon work to warrant any further increase, in fact one councillor nuggcatod that in some cases men were onlv doing naif a day's work for a full day s pay. Councillor Windlcy, although ing tho increase, pointed out that thoro was need of some clearing up process. The council, ho said, had always endeavour'ed to meet the demands of cmployees in a reasonable manner, but while increases had been granted there was not a sufficiently good return for tho money. Ho moved that tho increase bo granted on condition that there be a clearing up. Following this there was a discussion as to the process of such a clearing up, and during this Councillor Bowler remarked that ho behoved in paying a man what ho earned. Ho was not a low wage man. but he did think that employees should show that thev were worthy of an increase. In some cases they were. As to the- request of tho roadmen, he thought that 13a a day would meet, the call and ho moved that a« an amendment that la per day increase bo granted to the roadmen, excluding the foreman, whose wages should remain as at Tho amendment was seconded by Councillor Prosser ’and carried.
